Author's Comments

LAST UPDATE: 6.16.09

Back in the day, I used to be a hardcore commenter, and I'd get a lot of feedback from people who were really appreciative of my comments/critiques. Thus, I decided to write a little tutorial on good comment-giving.

I sort of made a disclaimer in the article itself, but just to reiterate: I'm not the god of critiquing. I'm not making any claims to have the only good way of giving comments. These are just little methods that I use and that I've found to be beneficial when leaving a critical comment. Take it for what it's worth.

Hey this helps out alot. :) Lately I've just been browsing around and always a bit afraid to do any critiques thinking I might say something wrong and get my head bit off. This is really helpful thanks ^^

I try and use these guidelines when I comment on people's work on the internet. The only hard thing is using them in real life. I hate it when people ask me to give them an honest criticque in person, cause I never want to hurt people's feelings.

I think I'll try practicing though. :)

What would you do if you and a couple others were stranded in the forest and it was freezing and you were huddled around your meager fire and your friend just falls over and dies? would you resort to cannibalism?

-would it merely postpone death, or is there hope of ever getting out of the woods?

there would be hope.

-well, since I try to be an optimist, I'd eat my friend......

It is harding giving them in real life... There's a boy in my art class who always asks for opinions about his works and he's very talented, but as soon as you say something that he doesn't agree with, he flips out and starts complaining about how much he sucks. I definitely prefer giving and receiving crits online instead - It's much less personal.

This is excellent. Constructive criticizm is a very important subject for me and I've had a lot of arguments about it in the past. I will show it to those people who can't criticize properly... and see if it'll help them!

Geez, I never expected to find something like this in DA ^^. Thanks, it really helps.

Excellent critique guide. Though it's not very lengthy nor does it offer many in depth examples, it's detailed and well written. If I were to read this as a new member of deviantART, I'd probably be more likely to create constructive comments rather than leave one liners.

If you're interested in our cause, I've recently started up The Comment Revolution as an initiative to educate deviants on the positives of leaving better comments, both for the artist and the critic. More information is available in my journal entry The Comment Revolution: Part 2.

Using this and expanding on it, I think this sort of critique guide could be vital to deviantART and could possibly be included in some sort of "new user guide" to help put the word out there. Thanks for giving us something structured to refer to when commenting.
