MEDIUM: Graphite, ink & PS touch-ups
DATE COMPLETED: 2006/2009
LAST UPDATE: 6.21.09

I've always loved Milla's features, and back in '05 or '06 (whenever I did that Natalie Portman drawing), I started a drawing of her, which has just now been completed.

:bulletblack: This piece has been submitted to *vulcania's Black & White Contest.

Critiques

:iconmachinesbleedtoo:
I LOVE HER SO MUCH. I would turn gay for that woman in a second. :D And you really captured her cheeky & charismatic personality well.

I adore the eyes- they have so much depth to them and all the little details like the shines on the nails and the creases in her fingers give this image a lot of character. The hair on her eyebrows is really nicely done too, I find that hard to draw.

I do think this looks a bit "plastic" though- the shines on her lips for example, and the sharpness of her eyes seem unrealistic. But I don't think it takes away from the image necessarily, just adds style. I'm only adding that in there because it may not be what you were going for, if you wanted a more realistic look.

Also as the other critique mentions, the lack of detail in the lower part of the hand is evident and looks out of place- especially where the creases are since they lack the shading to match the creases everywhere else.

I haven't given this a high originality rating purely because it's a portrait so please don't be offended by that!

Awesome work. :D

This is very good. The values are smoothly rendered throughout, and there is a lot of depth and character to the drawing. Proportions are fantastic, and there is no denying who the subject is meant to be. But the by far and away the greatest aspect of this drawing is the excellent execution of lights and darks; highlights and shadows, within the eyes, lips and fingernails to create a wonderfully glossy finish. Using such deep shadows, especially around the eyes, brilliantly provide great contrast to the reflective qualities throughout the entire piece, making the whites stand out and have that extra pop. The combination of the two together establish a much appreciated level of depth to a woman who doesn't conform to simple stereotypes, allowing the drawing to engage the viewer in areas where it might have been receding.

My one and only qualm with this image is lack of depth found in the lower portion of the hand. It doesn't appear as if you took the same amount of care with the hand and ear as you did with the eyes and mouth, while the pinkie finger just looks unfinished. It creates a disturbing discontinuity with the rich depth and dimension of the face that I just can't get over.

But well done nonetheless. I look forward to seeing more wonderful drawings from you in the future.

I agree. I love digital and I'm having a blast with it, but there's something special about traditional art. I love my pencils, and shading is so much fun.

I couldn't believe this was a drawing for a while there!
